Saint Bernards are large and powerful dogs. They require owners who are confident while handling them. One time, a dog trainer named Cesar Millan helped one of his clients learn how to handle this type of dog. Here’s how it went.
Erin is a volunteer rescuer at Sunny Saint Bernard Rescue. She owns two St. Bernards named Levi and Phoebe. Levi was a good dog that was relatively calm, but he changed when Phoebe came into Erin’s life.
The two dogs got along just fine. However, in one annual event that Erin attended, Levi and Phoebe became very aggressive. Levi had latched on to another dog, and other people had to help in detaching him. After that incident, Erin was no longer allowed to bring her dogs to any future events related to that.
Erin asked for the help of Cesar Millan. Cesar accompanied Erin to the same annual event, along with Phoebe and Levi. The trainer observed how the two dogs reacted to their surroundings.
Cesar saw that Phoebe was the instigator of fights. Levi only gets carried away by Phoebe’s actions. After seeing that, Cesar walked with Phoebe for a while to gauge what’s going on with her.
The trainer discovered that Phoebe was a very insecure dog. Cesar thinks her owner’s lack of confidence exacerbated the dog’s insecurity. If the owner can’t take the lead, the dogs will act on their own.
After a while, Cesar took both the dogs and showed Erin how to walk correctly with them. She has to be the one leading the walk and not her dogs. Everyone at the event was also observing Cesar. The crowd was amazed at how the trainer handled the dogs with such ease.
Erin accepted criticism and followed the trainer’s instructions. She became more aware of the things she was doing wrong. Erin is hoping that she and her dogs get invited again to the event once she can control them.
