A stray Chihuahua wandered the busy streets of Bakersfield, California for around six months. It was a wonder how she survived alone despite the dangers of being hit by a car and starvation. Thankfully, several people gave her food, and some of them even tried to get near her and rescue her. However, the Chihuahua would not let anyone near her and would back away whenever someone tried.
Danny Spanks, founder of Safefurr Place Animal Rescue, was one of those people who noticed the dog in a parking lot. He gave it food and tried to approach it, but it also pulled away. Days later, Danny kept seeing social media posts about the same brown dog as concerned citizens took photos of the Chihuahua and posted them on social media.
She was seen in different locations but only within the vicinity of Bakersfield. Danny knew he needed to do something and save the dog, so he visited the possible locations of the Chihuahua. When he located her, he started giving her food and treats and named her Honey. She would react positively to the things Danny gave her, but just the same, she would back away afterward.
The real breakthrough came when Danny thought of giving Honey a yellow softball. She loved it so much that she started opening up to Danny. He brought her more toys, food, and treats. Soon after, Honey began to look forward to Danny’s visits, and when the time was right, he put her on a leash and brought her home to safety.
Danny took care of Honey for months. And though he was able to build a relationship with her, he knew that Honey would be happier elsewhere. So he brought her to the Oregon Rescue when he had an opportunity, and within two weeks, Honey found her forever family.
Thanks to people like Danny, stray dogs can change their lives for the better. Watch Honey’s story in the video below.
