Tom Turchich wants to see the world. But he doesn’t just want any highlight tour; he wants to see everything in between. So he decided to embark on a five-year walk all around the world, spanning all seven continents. And walking by Tom’s side is his trusted dog, Savannah.
Tom adopted Savannah when she was merely three months old. At first, with the puppy being small, Tom would place the pup in the back pocket of his cart. This is a cart where he puts all his belongings for the journey. But in time, Savannah grew bigger, and she could endure the long walk that Tom makes each day.
Eight-hour daily walk
Tom started his journey from his home in Austin, Texas. The first leg of the journey took him to South America. For a year and a half, Tom and Savannah walked an average of eight hours a day. And this took them all the way to Uruguay.
Their second leg brought them to Europe. They started in Denmark, walking all the way to Spain, then moved on to Italy. From there, the adventurous duo will move on to Turkey and then to Mongolia.
So far, Tom and Savannah have walked 18,000 miles, covering 37 countries, in five continents. According to Tom’s route plan, the two have roughly 10,000 miles more to go for the next two years.
The perfect walking companion
Tom couldn’t imagine making the voyage with anyone else. There were times in their journey that Tom felt tired, and his body was beaten. But when he looks at Savannah, he sees a rock-steady companion that lifts his spirits up, giving him the strength to soldier on.
Tom says that after their journey, he is going to have a statue built for Savannah. This is his way of thanking her for being by his side through the hardships and victories they experienced.
