Dogs are considered as man’s best home companions; that is why people cannot understand why there are cultures in some parts of the world that allow dog meat as part of their diet.
At present, animal rights groups are working hand-in-hand to educate people about respecting the rights of the animals to live. These groups are going in different parts of the world to rescue animals that are victims of abuse, animals traded illegally, and animals whose meat will be sold in the black market.
One of the significant events that people all over the world are fighting against is the Dog Festival in Yulin, China. The festival started in 2009, which lasts for ten days. During the festivities, a lot of dogs are killed and eaten by people. The dogs experience torture before being exterminated.
Animal rescue groups from China and other countries work together to rescue the dogs that will be killed before the festivities begin. They intercept the trucks full of dogs to be slaughtered.
In 2015, Humane Society International (HSI) was able to rescue more than 1,400 dogs going to Yulin. Humane Society International is a global organization whose mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and treat animals in danger. They also educate people about animal rights and protection.
One of the most influential photos from the rescue in Yulin was when a dog reached out his paw outside the truck to shake hands with one of his rescuers. The said photo was shared on Facebook and has touched a lot of people. It was shared for more than 400 times.
The dogs rescued at Yulin Dog Festival were either adopted or placed in shelters to protect them from abuse.
Humane Society International won’t stop doing its mission to protect the animals. They will continue to rescue animals in need and to educate people about animal welfare.
Thank you, HSI, for protecting our four-legged companions!
